The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has warned its members against posting explicit or inappropriate content on social media while wearing military uniforms, saying such conduct damages the image of the armed forces and violates military regulations.
The warning follows the circulation of a viral video allegedly showing a female soldier performing a striptease while dressed in uniform. The incident has sparked widespread debate on social media about professionalism, discipline and the responsible use of military attire.
SANDF Says South African Uniform Represents the Nation
In an official statement, the SANDF expressed concern over what it described as a growing trend of military personnel sharing explicit or suggestive content online while in uniform.
According to the defence force, although soldiers are entitled to their personal freedoms, wearing the military uniform carries responsibilities that extend beyond private expression.
“While the SANDF respects the personal freedoms of its members, the public display of such content, particularly explicit, suggestive or inappropriate, undermines the dignity of the uniform and the values of the SANDF,” the statement said.
The military added that all personnel are expected to uphold discipline, professionalism and respect for the institution at all times.
“The Uniform Isn’t Yours”
SANDF spokesperson Siphiwe Dlamini stressed that military uniforms remain the property of the state and must be treated with respect.
“You cannot express yourself in uniform. Remember, the uniform is not yours; you don’t own the uniform. The uniform is paraphernalia given to you by the SANDF, which in the end becomes government property,” Dlamini said.
He explained that strict regulations govern how soldiers conduct themselves whenever they are in uniform, whether on duty or in public.
Military Warns of Disciplinary Action
The authority said members who violate its code of conduct could face disciplinary measures under the Military Discipline Code.
The statement noted that behaviour which brings the military into disrepute is considered a serious offence and will not be tolerated.
Military leadership, led by General Rudzani Maphwanya, Chief of the SANDF, reiterated its commitment to enforcing discipline across the armed forces.
“The Chief of the SANDF, General Rudzani Maphwanya, together with the entire Military Command Council reiterate their unequivocal warning to all SANDF members that this conduct constitutes a criminal offence under military law and will not go unpunished,” the statement added.
Investigation Yet to Be Confirmed
The SANDF has not confirmed whether the soldier featured in the viral video has been formally identified or whether disciplinary proceedings have been initiated.
However, officials indicated that any member found to have violated military regulations would face appropriate action in line with the law and internal disciplinary procedures.
