Burkina Faso has introduced a new ceremonial military uniform that celebrates the country’s rich cultural heritage, as hundreds of newly commissioned officers graduated from the Georges Namoano Military Academy.
The unveiling took place during the graduation ceremony of the academy’s 25th graduating class, held at the institution’s newly established campus. According to the country’s presidential administration, the ceremonial attire is crafted from the traditional fabric of the Gourmanché people, one of the largest ethnic communities in eastern Burkina Faso.
The distinctive fabric, which has long been associated with cultural initiation ceremonies and community traditions, now forms part of the military’s ceremonial identity. The move reflects the government’s continued efforts to incorporate national heritage into state institutions while strengthening a sense of patriotism among members of the armed forces.
217 New Officers Commissioned
A total of 217 second lieutenants successfully completed their military training and were commissioned during the ceremony.
Of these graduates, 199 officers will serve in the Burkina Faso Armed Forces, while the remaining officers come from partner African nations. The academy continues to play an important regional role in military training, producing officers for several countries across the continent.

The academy’s 25th graduating class was named in honour of Lieutenant Alexandre Bienvenu Sawadogo, a Burkina Faso military officer who lost his life while serving the nation in February 2022.
